Community of Excellence

Through its Communities of Excellence initiative, the Commission works alongside local leaders to help Northeast Mississippi towns identify their strengths, set shared goals, and build long-term strategies for success. This hands-on process encourages collaboration across business, education, government, and community sectors to create stronger, more vibrant places to live and work. Each participating community commits to a culture of continuous improvement, celebrating progress and inspiring others across the region. This initiative is supported through the partnership of CREATE Foundation, Appalachian Regional Commission, Tennessee Valley Authority, Mississippi State University, and the University of Mississippi.
The Communities of Excellence initiative grew from 6 communities to 10 actively engaged communities working on enhancing quality of life across the region.
In 2025, Community of Excellence forums were held in Itawamba County, 2 forums in Benton County, and rounding out the year with Prentiss County. Tishomingo will become our newest partner in 2026, followed by Monroe County and Lee County.
