COACH JOE BRIGANCE SCHOLARSHIP (for Houston High School seniors)

Deadline: 03/31/2020
Joe F. Brigance

(January 9, 1923 – January 21, 1966)

Joe Brigance, affectionately known as “Coach Joe”, was born in Ellisville, Mississippi, graduated high school at Mt. Olive, and completed Mississippi College in three years. He came to Houston High School in 1948 as a teacher, football coach, and girls’ basketball coach. He coached the Topperettes until two years before Hodgkins disease claimed his life in January, 1966, at the age of 43.

Coach Joe served as a deacon, choir member, and teacher at Houston First Baptist Church. He was faithful – faithful to Christ, to his church, and to his assigned tasks. Coach Joe was full of love for Christ, the Bible, the church, his family, his associates, his students, and the work to which God had called him. He loved the things that are everlastingly right, pure, and honest, and his actions recalled the words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, “. whosoever shall do and teach (these commandments) the same shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.” To apply for this scholarship, students must be graduating seniors at Houston High School.
